Assyrtiko

This is Assyrtiko far from Santorini, yet just as uncompromising. Grown on the slate soils of Halkidiki’s high slopes, at the edge of Mount Athos, these vines are battered by sea winds by day and mountain breezes by night. Altitude gives them precision, the slate gives them minerality, and the winery’s low-yield obsession gives them power.

Akrathos doesn’t dress its Assyrtiko in oak or distractions. Stainless steel, time on lees, and nothing else. The result is a white that feels chiselled from the mountain itself: sharp, saline, and alive. It’s proof that Assyrtiko is not bound to one island’s story. In Halkidiki it finds a new accent — still fierce, still bright, but with a mountain edge that demands attention.

Hints of green apple, white peach, smoke and cream on the nose, leading to great texture on the palate, with very good complexity of fruit, and an elegant, long finish.' Matteo Furlan, The Dorchester. 'Vibrant and fresh, with an interesting finish – this would be good with fried food.' Giancarlo Cuccuru, Lutyens Grill at The Ned

(2018) An Assyrtiko not from Santorini, but from a new venture in Halkidiki in the north of the mainland, a cool region where the grapes are picked considerably later. There's a lovely waxy citrus and almost figgy character here, in a very aromatic and quite intriguing wine, somethig like blood orange, maybe even a hint mango in the background. On the palate lovely drive and focus: salty minerals for sure, pithy lemon and zesty, tangy grapefruit, but that lighter, stony and fine earthy quality shines through into a long, citrus finish.

The producer

On the rugged slopes of Mount Athos, where Aristotle once walked, Akrathos Winery is redefining what Halkidiki can deliver. High-altitude vineyards (550–700m), slate-rich soils, and a mix of mountain winds and sea breezes create the sharp minerality and precision that run through every bottle. Since 2009, Akrathos … Read more
