Xinomavro
Xinomavro is not a grape that bends. It tests both the grower and the drinker. At Akrathos, it’s planted high on the Athos slopes, where slate soils and cold nights force it to ripen slowly, stubbornly, until the tannins soften and the fruit finally gives in.
This isn’t the rustic Xinomavro you’ve met before. Akrathos treats it with precision — careful extraction, a year in French oak, time to breathe before release. The result is still wild at heart, but refined enough to show another side of the variety: juicy, aromatic, structured without being harsh.
It’s the mountain’s answer to Naoussa, a red that carries Xinomavro’s signature bite but speaks in a cleaner, sharper accent. Akrathos Xinomavro doesn’t ask to be liked. It asks to be respected.

(2018) What a lovely sweet-fruited, ripe and glossy wine this is, but tempered with a bit of real structure and bite. Twelve months in French oak barrels has rounded and added cedar and a touch of smokiness, but the purity of fruit and the taut, wirey structure of firm but ripe tannins and cherry-pit acidity is lovely.

The producer
On the rugged slopes of Mount Athos, where Aristotle once walked, Akrathos Winery is redefining what Halkidiki can deliver. High-altitude vineyards (550–700m), slate-rich soils, and a mix of mountain winds and sea breezes create the sharp minerality and precision that run through every bottle. Since 2009, Akrathos … Read more
