Assyrtiko
Assyrtiko may be inseparable from Santorini in most people’s minds, but it does not belong to one island. Akriotou takes the variety to Central Greece, where the expression becomes a little less volcanic, a little more open, but keeps the acidity and tension that made Assyrtiko famous in the first place.
The 2024 is 100% Assyrtiko from Central Greece, with fruit sourced around Plataies in Boeotia. Low vineyard yields bring concentration, while the wine stays firmly on the fresh side of the spectrum. Lemon peel, white peach and citrus lead, followed by herbal notes and a subtle saline character that becomes more noticeable through the finish.
After fermentation, the wine remains in stainless steel on its fine lees with regular bâtonnage. That extra time gives Assyrtiko more texture without covering its natural precision with oak. Crisp, mineral and quietly complex, it is an easy fit for seafood, grilled fish and vegetable-led dishes, but also a useful introduction to what Assyrtiko can look like away from its most famous home.

The producer
Greek varieties come with baggage. Some are famous. Some are misunderstood. Others barely register outside the places where they grow. Vasiliki Akriotou approaches them without much interest in those old hierarchies.
Founded in 2015 after decades of work as an oenologist, Akriotou Microwinery is built around small-scale vinification and the idea that each grape deserves the right place and the right treatment. Savatiano is central to that story, particularly the old vines around Mount Kithairon, but it is not the whole story. Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Aidani and rarer Greek varieties all form part of a wider exploration of what contemporary Greek wine can be when reputation stops dictating the result … Read more
