Orivatis Pinot Noir

Orivatis Pinot Noir

Orivatis Pinot Noir is a fresh, finely drawn expression of the variety, grown in the high-altitude vineyards of Aigialia in the Peloponnese. The 15-year-old vines sit at 640–700 metres, where the cooler conditions help preserve Pinot Noir’s natural lift, red-fruit clarity and balance.

The grapes are destemmed without crushing, followed by cold soaking and skin contact under controlled conditions. Alcoholic fermentation proceeds at gradually increasing temperatures with délestage. The wine then remains on its lees for four months with regular stirring and matures for at least four months in the cellar.

Bright ruby with purple highlights, it opens with plum, fresh cherry, strawberry jam, blackcurrant and raspberry, followed by subtle notes of bacon, leather, graphite and liquorice. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and supple, with soft tannins, balanced acidity and a long cherry-led finish. Serve at 15°C on its own or with light red-sauce pasta, salmon burgers, grilled red meat or moussaka.

The producer

Greek varieties come with baggage. Some are famous. Some are misunderstood. Others barely register outside the places where they grow. Vasiliki Akriotou approaches them without much interest in those old hierarchies.

Founded in 2015 after decades of work as an oenologist, Akriotou Microwinery is built around small-scale vinification and the idea that each grape deserves the right place and the right treatment. Savatiano is central to that story, particularly the old vines around Mount Kithairon, but it is not the whole story. Assyrtiko, Malagouzia, Aidani and rarer Greek varieties all form part of a wider exploration of what contemporary Greek wine can be when reputation stops dictating the result … Read more
